Caleb Vanden Eynden is a senior music education student at the University of Dayton. He is currently wrapping up a year long thesis project on Dayton Funk history and pedagogy. Caleb spent the summer of 2019 interviewing local Dayton musicians who were popular during the funk era of the 1970s and 80s. This project explores not only the fascinating oral history of Dayton’s music scene, but also explores ways in which this music and culture can be preserved through music education.

This year, we have the privilege of speaking with candidates running for elected office. We particularly enjoy getting to know first time candidates! In this episode, our host Libby Ballengee speaks with Mark Fogel, an Air Force fighter pilot, leadership expert, University of Dayton faculty member and now a candidate for the Ohio State Senate!
Mark was raised in the Dayton area after his father, once a high school math teacher, got a new job with NCR. Like many Dayton children of the 80’s and 90’s, Mark grew up experiencing first-hand the devastation wrought by the loss of Dayton’s manufacturing core.
A proud American patriot, Mark wanted to fly airplanes and serve his country, and was fortunate enough to be nominated to attend the US Air Force Academy by US Senator and astronaut John Glenn. Upon graduation, Mark was in the first class to serve after the attacks of 9/11, and he chose to enter pilot training.
Achieving his dream of being an Air Force fighter pilot, Mark saw duty throughout Europe and the Middle East, and served a combat tour in Afghanistan flying intelligence and reconnaissance missions in support of friendly forces.
Being a son of Dayton, Mark knew he needed to give back to the community that gave him so much. After leaving active duty, he earned his master’s in public policy at the Harvard Kennedy School of Government where he studied economic policy, lawmaking, finance, and other topics, all while flying fighters with the Air National Guard…and becoming a new dad to twin boys.
As soon as he could, Mark returned home with his wife—herself born and raised in Dayton, and expecting their third—and kids, where they settled in the same town they grew up in.
Today, Mark works at one of Ohio’s largest manufacturers where he runs a leadership development program for military veterans to become business leaders. He teaches graduate students as a faculty member at the University of Dayton, and continues to serve as a Squadron Commander at the rank of Lt Col in the Ohio Air National Guard.
Mark is running for State Senate District 6 on a promise to reinvest in quality jobs, education, healthcare, and rebuild an Ohio that works for everyone.
