Through the course of one dizzying night at a club, JAILBAIT follows the parallel stories of two fifteen-year-old girls, desperate to grow up, and two thirty-something men who are looking to be twenty-one again. High-school sophomores Claire and Emmy make a game of posing as college students in order to meet older men. Brash bachelor Mark thinks a night out with attractive girls will be just what his friend Robert needs to recover from his recent breakup. When this unlikely foursome collides, they discover some surprising and dangerous compatibilities. But when Emmy encounters the sexual expectations of the slick Mark, and Claire finds herself surprisingly drawn to the heartbroken Robert, both girls must decide how far they are willing to go while playing at adulthood. Smart, funny, and disturbing, JAILBAIT asks the question: When do you really become an adult?
The Playground Theatre’s mission is to be a playground for actors, artists, designers, and dreamers, to bring to the stage raw, honest, and relevant stories that reflect the human condition and our unique journey through life.
Christopher Hahn and Jenna Valyn are the Founding Artistic Directors of The Playground Theatre. The mission of the Playground is to provide a fresh, modern approach to theatre by producing raw and realistic shows with the added goal of introducing live theatre to new audiences. Since The Playground’s inception in June of 2014, they have produced three successful productions including 2 regional premieres and are on the verge of kicking off their second season as we speak. They have received critical acclaim from the community and were asked to be a part of The Victoria Theatre Association’s ImPACt program in 2015. Jenna has directed 2 out of 3 of The Playground’s productions and Christopher has acted in each one. Most recently, they acted opposite each other in Neil LaBute’s, reasons to be pretty.
Christopher and Jenna are Dayton natives. Combined, they have over 25 years of experience in the Dayton theatre community. They both studied Theatre Performance at Sinclair Community College where they received full ride performance scholarships, were recipients of the prestigious Irene Ryan nomination, and competed in the Kennedy Center American College Theatre Festival. Locally, they have both received multiple Daytony Awards for excellence in acting.
After their time at Sinclair, they moved to Chicago where they furthered their studies. Christopher attended DePaul University’s very prominent theatre conservatory program on a performance scholarship and Jenna had the honor of attending Columbia College Chicago. While a part of these programs, each of them had the privilege of studying with critically acclaimed Broadway directors as well as training with Second City faculty and ensemble members, including one of the writers for The Drowsy Chaperone.
Outside of the school environment, both Christopher and Jenna took part in numerous acting intensives including a master’s class taught by Steppenwolf ensemble member Rick Snyder. Additionally, they were active in the professional Chicago theatre community. Jenna had the opportunity to intern for a prominent storefront theatre, where she assisted with casting, productions, sat in on rehearsals, and performed front of house duties. Christopher had the honor to perform in two regional premieres at Redtwist Theatre and acted in an award-winning short film.
As Artistic Directors of The Playground, Christopher and Jenna have taught acting, improv and audition workshops to both kids and young adults. They have worked with a local Girl Scout Troupe, Ruskin Elementary and partnered with Dayton Metro Library’s as part of the Check Out The Arts program. Additionally, The Playground has been invited to perform with the esteemed Black Box Improv Theatre multiple times, give presentations at the Dayton Leadership Conference as well as perform at the UpDayton Summit. The Playground also currently sits on the Daytony Committee.
