#690 What are Montessori Schools? A Conversation with Gloria Dei

By GemCityBlog| 2019-02-18T07:47:29+00:00 February 18th, 2019|Podcast|

What is a Montessori school? We see the name scrolling when there are school closures. Is that a religious school? a charter school? Something altogether different? Our host Libby Ballengee learns in this episode that it’s the latter in this community conversation with leaders from the Gloria Dei Montessori school in Dayton.

Founded in 1962 by nationally renowned Montessori expert Virginia Varga, Gloria Dei is one of the oldest Montessori Schools in the country, serving students from 18 months through 8th grade. Gloria Dei is nestled in a quiet neighborhood north of Dayton in a converted tool & dye shop with lovely wooded grounds, homey classrooms, and ample room for outdoor projects and play. Students come from all around the Dayton area and are a little microcosm of the amazing diversity found in our city.

Gloria Dei provides an authentic Montessori education with carefully-arranged, multi-age classrooms that give children sensory materials from which to learn, freedom from rigid desks and time limits, and opportunities for collaboration and feedback from peers. This nurturing environment in turn fosters responsibility, independence, and innovation. Students also participate in many field trips around Dayton including performances at the Schuster Center, service projects at Aullwood Audubon, and physical education activities such as ice skating at Riverscape.

Their major project this year is developing a scholarship fund to bridge the gap in the low-income scholarship amount and our actual tuition amount. Gloria Dei welcomed 22 low-income students this year but with each student they assume a deficit of $2150.

Interested in donating to our scholarship fund?  Please consider donating in the following ways:

  • Online to their charitable checking account with The Dayton Foundation (account number 7576, https://www.daytonfoundation.org/ccgift.html)
  • Using the enclosed envelope to mail a check to The Dayton Foundation.

NOTE: Making a gift to Gloria Dei through The Dayton Foundation is fully tax deductible!

#688 Storyteller – Moriah Haven presents The Growth Project Chapter 2

By GemCityBlog| 2019-02-10T17:20:41+00:00 February 13th, 2019|Podcast|

@MoriahHaven returns to @GemCityPodcast to chat with @theizzyrock about her new EP, The Growth Project Chapter 2.

Moriah Haven is a Singer-Songwriter, whose projects utilize various concept characters, with each expressing a clear idea in their own voice. Though, spoken through many characters, her projects seek to reflect her personal beliefs, in hopes of raising awareness (and removing stigmas) on speaking openly about mental illness, surviving abuse, body positivity, and sexuality, and LBGTQ+ rights. With her own intimate history concerning these matters, her songs often facilitate these discussions with a brutal, poetic honesty.

“For me, singing is mostly about the articulation of emotional intention through melody. The arts, and music in particular, seem to connect us with each other on a spiritual level like nothing else quite can; creating a unique human connection you rarely see manifesting through other expressions.”

Growing up with strong roots in Appalachian Music, Country, Blues, Bluegrass, and Gospel, her performances pay homage to the tradition of these genres, often evoking an era and style more reminiscent of times past. She is a lover of tradition, as much as she is of experimentation, who learned to sing in her Grandmother’s Country Church, and taught herself how to use midi in her home studio. Though many of her projects may not seem palatable to many mainstream Christian sensibilities, faith is still a guiding force in this black sheep’s art. Though Haven herself may often seek to test juxtapositions in her presentation, one can rest assured, that she’s always doing her best to stay genuine at heart, while reflecting that sincerely through heart.

#685 Storyteller – Dark Machine Nation

By GemCityBlog| 2019-02-01T10:44:59+00:00 February 6th, 2019|Podcast|

Dark Machine Nation is intense vocal Power Noise/Industrial Hardcore from Dayton, OH; the brainchild of Therion Major, born in Pittsburgh, PA.
Inspired by the noise of manufacturing and the rubble and dust of demolition, Dark Machine Nation aims to become the truest, hardest sound in industrial. Distorted bass drums march over an atmosphere of metallic percussion, as harsh vocals speak prophecies of wrath and megalomania. Coming to you live, DMN will throw a relentless pulse of noise, bass and hate to make you move, or leave you devastated.

#684 On The Brightside

By GemCityBlog| 2019-02-01T10:38:48+00:00 February 4th, 2019|Podcast|

In this episode, we invite you take a walk on the Brightside with our host Libby Ballengee and one of her most admired Daytonians, Carli Dixon. Carli doesn’t talk about improving Dayton, her and her family roll up their sleeves and physically make it better. How have they done that? Listen to this episode to hear her family’s inspiring story.

In this conversation we focus mostly on Carli and her husband Hamilton Dixon’s newest and boldest project, the newly opened Brightside Music & Event Venue. One of the things that has been sorely lacking in Dayton, especially downtown, is a general admission indoor venue that local bands and promoters can use for larger shows, and a space for weddings and non-profits that can use their own catering or carry in food. A new space downtown called The Brightside has newly opened and is filling in for all those needs.

This venue is part of a parcel of buildings the Dixon’s bought near the corner of Third and Keowee 10 years ago, and it has become their passion project. “It has been a thrill for us to transform the building from an abandoned warehouse to Dayton’s newest music and event venue,” Carli stated.

The transformation of the primary building at 905 East Third St is nothing short of astounding. An abandoned property full of debris and discarded belongings, the story of how this space came to be, and the vision for its future is truly remarkable.
