At the beginning of 2020, we asked Daytontians who they wanted us to interview this
year, and one name that was enthusiastically mentioned was Dr. Derek Petrey. We had
never heard from him, so our host Libby Ballengee reached out and had a fascinating
conversation! Plus we found out that his big event is this week! Great timing!
Dr. Derek Petrey was born in Dayton, Ohio. He grew up in Eastmont and went to Roth
Middle School, graduating from Belmont High School in 1988. He is a lifelong United
Methodist who currently attends St. Paul’s United Methodist Church in the Historic
He studied Modern Languages at Wright State University and graduated with a
Bachelor’s in 1992. He then studied in Chile for four months and then was accepted at
Ohio State University, where he did his Master’s and Doctoral Studies. He studied Latin
American Cultural Studies and wrote his dissertation on the use of poetry and music in
popular resistance to militarization and globalization in Chile and Brazil.
He started at Sinclair Community College in Fall 2003. He has taught courses in
Spanish and Portuguese language, literature, and cultures, and has developed courses
in Spanish for Social Work, Spanish for Health Care, and Spanish for Law Enforcement.
He has also worked as a free-lance translator and interpreter since 1995, with particular
expertise in legal identification documents, university transcripts, scholarly articles and
conservation biology. He served as Honors Program Director for the College from
2009-2015 and has been director of Sinclair’s Center for Teaching and Learning since
2015. He has twenty years of experience designing courses for adults outside of the
academic community, and currently serves the Dayton Council on World Affairs as Vice
Derek is also the Coordinator of REACH Across Dayton, a program that seeks to
promote learning in the arts and humanities by creating an atmosphere that builds
respect, knowledge, appreciation, and understanding for this area’s diverse cultural
populations. REACH is a collaborative program between Sinclair Community College,
EboNia Gallery and The Contemporary.

We are pleased that Montgomery County Recorder, Brandon C. McClain, joins us for our latest “community conversation.” What is a Recorder? We wondered too! Brandon explains his role as Recorder, his thoughts on receiving the 2019 Herman Zerger Veteran of the Year award, and the importance of voting in the upcoming elections! (Remember – The voter registration deadline to vote in the Ohio primary is tomorrow – Tue Feb 18th for the March 17th primary!)
Brandon C. McClain graduated cum laude from the University of North Carolina at Pembroke with a Bachelor of Arts in Criminal Justice; the University of Cincinnati with a Master of Science in Criminal Justice; and the University of Dayton College of Law with a Juris Doctor. He is also a veteran, having served as a non-commissioned officer in the Army National Guard, achieving the rank of Sergeant, prior to him being honorably discharged.
Since March 2018, Recorder McClain has initiated two key programs: the Veterans Identification Card Program and the Fraud Alert Notification System. In addition to his elected duties, he serves on the Dayton Public Schools Operational Advisory Committee, the Board of Trustees for the Dayton Bar Association, the Mary Scott Nursing Center Board of Directors, and the Sinclair Community College Paralegal Program Advisory Committee.
In recognition of his efforts as Recorder, Mr. McClain has received the Top Ten African-American Male Award (Parity, Inc., 2019), the Forty Under 40 Award (the Dayton Business Journal, 2019) and has been inducted into the Dayton Bar Association Foundation Fellowship (Dayton Bar Association, 2019).
